Facebook Graph Search: social search engine ready

“Graph Search” is the new search engine from Facebook, for finding information and people within Facebook.

Facebook takes a further step in expanding the platform’s features and launches the new social search engine called “Graph Search“.
There was much anticipation around this presentation, as a number of journalists in recent days received an invitation from Facebook’s headquarters for a special event about which no details had been leaked.
Many speculated that it was the presentation of a much-awaited Facebook Phone, as it has been talked about for months (while at the same time official denials have been arriving for months).
Instead, the protagonist of the event was the new Graph Search engine.
A first step towards open competition with Google? It’s too early to draw such a conclusion, as this new search engine operates solely within Facebook itself and not, therefore, on the web in a broader sense.
Social search will not only produce results by drawing from one’s friend list but will refer to all Facebook subscribers, thus extending significantly and referring to what has been shared.
It will be possible to make actual requests with Graph Search, not only using keywords but by formulating sentences: it will thus be possible to know how many and which “people like the movie The Matrix” or ask to search for “subscribers who practice running”.

All of this, according to what Zuckerberg, claims, with an eye on subscriber privacy: Graph Search will indeed scan public profiles or those with non-restrictive settings.
Otherwise, the search engine will not present the preferences and characteristics of private profiles in the results.
In short, for Facebook it seems to be time to leverage the enormous amount of data spontaneously distributed by subscribers, stored in databases.
With this system, it naturally goes in a certain sense to organize all the “likes” expressed and links shared, likely forming the first step for a more substantial future development of the search engine itself.
The novelty, introduced and presented a few hours ago, will be gradually implemented on all profiles: as always, in full Facebook style, the debut is reserved for a few subscribers before being rolled out to everyone.
