Facebook “Ask” Button for Flirting and Dating

Flirt on Facebook and make acquaintances with romantic potential, without the risk of running into people who are already in a relationship: the secret of the new “Ask” button.

Big news is coming to Facebook, this time of particular interest to those who consider the social platform a good ground for making acquaintances and starting romantic relationships.
In fact, it seems that a new button will appear soon, currently in the testing phase on only a few profiles in the United States: this is the “Ask” button.
The innovative icon will be placed next to the indication of users’ relationship status, in cases where the user has not made their situation public.
If a contact is interested in learning more, they would simply need to press the “Ask” button.
The other person will then receive a request from the system – not visible to others, completely private – to clarify whether they are single or in a relationship; this can be done by updating their profile and making the information public.
If, however, they prefer to maintain privacy, they can opt for a second possibility: to inform only the person who sent the request via the “Ask” button.

The dissemination of news about this new implementation has led industry observers to speculate about the motivation behind this choice by the Facebook staff.

Some consider this interesting for the further profiling of users who provide little personal information for public display.
In this way, Facebook cannot fully profile the user and therefore cannot derive revenue for advertising purposes, in order to better offer banners that closely match the user type.
The other hypothesis relates to a potential new venture by Facebook into a market that is still very lucrative in some countries: that of online dating sites.
Between the two possibilities, perhaps the more appealing one relates only to marketing and advertising, rather than to further platform developments towards other forms of business.
