Apple recalls faulty adapters for shock risk: what to do

Shock hazard for some faulty Apple adapters: the company launches a recall procedure. How to identify the products at risk.

Apple has initiated official procedures to resolve an issue related to one of its products.
It has come to light in recent hours that a series of adapters may pose a risk of electric shock, so the Cupertino company has decided to quickly remedy the situation.
For this reason, to protect its customers and consumers, Apple has officially launched the replacement program for the AC wall adapter.
Although referring to very rare cases, the Apple staff preferred to warn its vast audience, explaining that ‘the Apple bipolar AC wall adapters designed for use in continental Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Korea, Argentina, and Brazil could break and create a risk of electric shock’.
Specifically, this refers to the wall plug adapters supplied with Macs and some iOS devices between 2003 and 2015.
Some of the defective parts had also been used as components included in the Apple International AC Adapter Kit.
To determine if your adapter is among those at potential risk – however rare – of electric shock, you will need to observe its appearance, comparing it with the image accompanying this article.
In detail, if 4 or 5 characters are visible inside the slot – where it connects to the Apple power adapter – or if there are no characters at all, then it is indeed one of the adapters to be replaced.
If, on the contrary, a 3-letter regional code appears in the slot in the same spot (e.g., EUR, KOR, AUS, ARG, or BRA), then you are in possession of a safe adapter, as it is one of the redesigned parts.

What to do if the adapter is among the potentially defective ones?
On thepage set up by Appleit is explained that, as a first step, you will need your Mac, iPad, iPhone, or iPod serial number.
At this point, you can choose to initiate the replacement procedure through three channels, at your discretion:

  • by visiting the nearest Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.
  • by requesting replacement via the web.
  • by contacting Apple Support.

Naturally, the adapter replacement will be completely free of charge: you will not have to pay anything to obtain a new and functional part.
