Android Wear is the new operating system entirely designed for wearable devices and smartwatches.
In the emerging scenario between the present and the future, related to the upcoming release of more and more wearable devices, Google is positioning itself in pole position.
The Mountain View giant has indeed presented a new operating system – named Android Wear – specifically refined for the use of smartwatches and new objects that are expected to become everyday items.
It’s unlikely that a truly standalone operating system has been developed solely for smartwatch use: it almost seems that Google is already looking beyond, thinking about objects we will wear and that will be interconnected, constantly connected to the mobile network.
Not surprisingly, Sundar Pichai (Senior Vice President, Android, Chrome & Apps at Google) declared unequivocally: “We are just at the beginning, we have just discovered what is possible with mobile technology“.
Certainly, the showstopper, at least for now, remains the interactive watch that is expected to be released soon, apparently developed in collaboration with LG.
However, there are other companies already developing projects in this direction, and Google’s staff has specifically indicated that these include Asus, Htc, Motorola, and Samsung.
As for processor suppliers, the names mentioned are Broadcom, Imagination, Intel, Mediatek, and Qualcomm.
From a design perspective, the first name to emerge is Fossil.
Apparently, the first smartwatch will arrive within 2014, and at that point, we will begin to discover all the potential that the new operating system Android Wear promises to have – especially for developers.
