**Google AdSense** has decided to stop ads with links. The stop is scheduled from March 10th and the notification has already been sent to most publishers.
The reason for the stop of link ads from Google AdSense is explained in the letter sent to the program’s subscribers by the Mountain View.
company. We have decided to disable link ads to modernize ad formats based on feedback from users, publishers, and advertisers. We will continue to focus on improving and developing other ad formats to help you grow your business.
The poor performance was, in truth, well-known to publishers, so much so that many had already discontinued the format. After all, Google doesn’t hide it:
Our experiments show that for the vast majority of publishers, adaptive display ads can generate similar revenue to link ads. We continuously optimize adaptive display ads to help you maximize your revenue. You can monitor the performance of your link units through the ad unit report and compare their performance before and after.
What will happen to Google AdSense program subscribers starting March 10th?
Big G explains it further.
- You will no longer be able to create link ad units.
- Your link ad units will be renamed by adding [previous link ad unit] to the end of the name. This change will apply to link ad units, both responsive and fixed-size ones.
- Responsive link ads will begin serving as display ad units on your site.
- Fixed-size link ads will no longer be served on your sites. If possible, we will compress each ad unit. In other cases, we will show a blank ad.
What you need to do from March 10th
No action is required from you regarding responsive link ads, as these will automatically serve as display ads from March 10, 2021. We recommend removing fixed-size link ad units from your site and trying the following ad formats instead:
- You can allow Auto ads to scan your site and automatically place ads where they are most likely to perform well. Learn more about getting started with Auto ads.
- Display ads perform well in any position on the site. Learn more about creating a display ad unit.
- For a personalized advertising experience, you might want to try Native ads. Learn more about creating a native ad unit.
- If your site is eligible for matched content, you can replace link ad units with customizable matched content units. Learn more about customizable matched content.
