.it domains with accented letters, registrations open

Up until now, registering a new domain with accented letters was not a possibility contemplated in Italy.
However, from 2:00 PM on Wednesday, July 11th, new .it domains can contain accents, opening up a host of potentially very appealing new websites.
The novelty doesn’t just stop at accents but extends to special characters, present for example in other languages.
Just think of the “c” with a “cedilla” (ç) or the “ß” present in many German words.
A true revolution in the domain registration sector in Italy which will kick off on Registro.it, the service of the Institute of Informatics and Telematics of the CNR (National Research Council).
The first thought naturally goes to foreign brands or even Italian companies whose names include accents or non-Latin characters: it is likely that all these entities will be interested in using a domain that perfectly matches the name of their corporate reality.
However, many “common” domain names will undoubtedly emerge that could have a certain appeal to surfers: just think of the most popular beverage in Italy to realize that someone will surely try to grab the domain www.caffè.it, just to give an example.

Registrations, it is important to specify, will take place according to the “perpetual after landrush” method, meaning that requests will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis on registro.it.
The decision to introduce these innovations, as explained by Maurizio Martinelli, head of the relevant area at IIT-CNR, “puts .it in step with other international registries, promotes intercultural dialogue, and meets the needs of bilingual Italian regions such as Valle d’Aosta and Trentino Alto-Adige“.
It is no coincidence that the next step will focus precisely on allowing the extension of IDNs to the 23 official languages of the European Union, in order to break down linguistic barriers.
