Good to know: online safety project by Google and PolPost

Online security must be protected: this is well known by Google and the Postal Police who have promoted a project called “Good to Know“. Here are the main contents.

It’s called “Good to Know” the new project for the protection of online security and privacy on the internet.
The promoters of this entirely Italian initiative are Google and the Postal Police: the two institutions – one from the web, the other from our country – have worked closely together to provide a series of useful tips, now gathered on the page “Good to Know“.
It will be possible to learn the rules to ensure a safe online presence and be protected from cyber criminals, thanks to advice grouped into four sections:

  • Your online security
  • Your data on the web
  • Your data on Google
  • Managing your data.

The first section discusses how to choose secure passwords, how to browse safely even when there are children in the family using the PC and the connection, and finally explains how to reduce the risk of encountering malware, viruses, and similar threats.
In the “Your data on the web” corner, basic notions will be learned about how cookies work and IP-based localization: this is how many sites collect information about internet users, relative to their web usage experience.

The last two sections – “Your data on Google” and “Managing your data” – explicitly refer, instead, to online security when dealing with a Google product: it explains what is stored in search logs and how these data influence the search results offered by the search engine giant.
It will also explain how to browse in private mode and what that means.
Furthermore, you will learn to manage your information released while using Google products more consciously and how to possibly modify or export it elsewhere.
The language chosen for the “Good to Know” campaign is deliberately very simple and basic, precisely to cater to everyone: from children to the more experienced, and those still not very familiar with the web.
In case of doubts, a glossary has also been provided to explain terms and clarify major questions.
