YouTube is reportedly set to launch a paid music service on certain Premium channels.
It’s certainly not the first time we’ve heard talk of paid channels on YouTube: on several occasions, the launch of specific on-demand channels has been hypothesized, mostly potentially managed by TV networks and major film studios to offer TV series and movies. This time, however, a different scenario is beginning to take shape, closer to very different but increasingly popular services such as Spotify or Google Music: it seems, in fact, that paid YouTube Premium music channels are about to arrive. The indiscretion was reported by Billboard and the Financial Times: both hypothesize a service more oriented towards consumption via tablet and smartphone, but naturally also available on PC. It would therefore be a paid music video platform that could also include a free tier, characterized, however, by heavy advertising. The premium version, on the other hand, would be free of ads and could also offer the ability to download desired tracks, to listen to them offline.
The hypothesis has neither been denied nor confirmed by the YouTube staff; upon the spread of this news, a statement simply explained that “we are working on new and better ways for users to enjoy YouTube content across all screens and for partners to reach fans“. The official communication concludes by stating that there are no announcements to make at the moment. Perhaps something is indeed brewing, but it seems we will have to wait a little longer to understand the veracity of these rumors and the potential scope of the project.
