The current cyber threat for iOS is called WireLurker: what to know about this malware.
A new, highly dangerous malware for Apple devices has been identified.
Its name is WireLurker and it is capable of infecting an iPhone by passing through a Mac.
In practice, simply connecting the iPhone to your Mac with a USB cable is enough to damage the smartphone, effectively transferring the virus.
The danger concerns all those who have used software to install a Chinese app store; therefore, the threat should not cause alarm to those who have always and only used the official Apple App Store to enrich their devices with content and features.
WireLurker was indeed introduced on “parallel” Chinese stores, used by thousands of users to search for and download third-party apps.
Despite the fact that the responsibility for the spread of WireLurker cannot in any way be attributed to Apple, a mobilization was nevertheless initiated from Cupertino headquarters to track down and above all to block this virus.
When contacted by the Wall Street Journal, Apple technicians explained that all applications found to be infected and potentially harmful have already been blocked.
This concerns approximately 460 apps, currently blocked and therefore unable not only to be downloaded but even to be launched if already present on Apple devices.
The company has therefore responded promptly, quickly, and precisely to the WireLurker threat, adding as a general recommendation that it is highly inadvisable to download software and apps from untrustworthy sources.
WireLurker immediately stood out for its dangerousness, as it uses a Mac as a “transport” medium to reach iPhones.
Not only that: for the first time, a virus has proliferated on iPhones not subjected to any jailbreak intervention.
A concrete threat, therefore, which has however already been blocked.
