On iPhone and iOS devices, WhatsApp will also become annually paid: this novelty has been officially confirmed by the company’s CEO.
Just a few weeks ago, we covered WhatsApp, which had already become a paid service for Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry. All users will know that after an initial period of free service, the company decided to require an annual fee to continue using the instant messaging application.
Similar news is emerging today: WhatsApp on iPhone and iOS devices has always been a paid service – unlike other operating systems – but until now, it simply involved paying the 79 cents of a euro (which later became 89 cents due to general price increases on the App Store) only at the time of download.
We learn today from an interview given by Jan Koum, the CEO of WhatsApp, to Dutch journalist Alexander Klopping, that a decision has been made to change the subscription model for iOS users as well.
The idea is therefore to charge 89 cents annually to all new WhatsApp customers using iPhones, iPads, or iPods.
From what we understand, the renewal mechanism should not affect existing long-term customers. However, it’s important to note that no announcement has yet appeared on the official WhatsApp blog, so there is no confirmation that the change will not impact current customers.
There is also no news on this front on the official Facebook page. In fact, the new payment model is not expected to launch immediately but within the next few months, by the end of the year.
