Yahoo! is about to acquire Tumblr: the board of directors has approved the operation.
For some time now, there have been discussions about the possible acquisition of Tumblr, a platform that bridges blogging and social networking, by Yahoo!.
The interest in Tumblr seemed quite strong, and a few hours ago, through the pages of the Wall Street Journal, it was learned that during Yahoo!’s latest board of directors meeting, the financial operation was indeed approved.
It also appears that the amount to be paid for the acquisition of Tumblr would be 1.1 billion dollars. The Wall Street Journal cites internal sources who have reportedly monitored the relevant dossier.
At the moment – it should be specified – no official press releases have been issued yet, neither by Yahoo! nor by Tumblr.
However, it is known that a press conference has been called for today in New York, so it is possible that this news – if confirmed and entirely true – could be disclosed without further speculation within a few hours.
Marissa Mayer, who has been leading Yahoo! for about a year, precisely since July 2012, is expected to attend the meeting with the press.
Regarding this appointment with the American media, the Bloomberg magazine instead anticipates that Yahoo! is about to announce some changes related to Flickr, the photo-sharing platform.
In either case, it is clear that web giants in recent months are decidedly focusing on services useful for streamlined, rapid, and extremely fast communication and sharing.
Twitter sets the standard; and Tumblr seems to be a strong candidate for integrating some customization to the concept of rapid content delivery.
UPDATE: 4 PM: two official press releases, from Yahoo! and Tumblr, confirm the acquisition.
