The Web in Italy at the Midpoint, But Broadband Remains a Chimera

It’s time for an assessment of the Internet in Italy, and ISTAT, as usual, provides an overview of network usage during 2010. One in two households uses the Internet, but broadband is not as widespread.

Year-end, time for assessment. ISTAT has just released data regarding Italians’ relationship with the Internet in 2010. According to ISTAT, 52.4% of Italian households (households with younger members are more receptive to the Internet) connect to the Internet. It is with this backdrop that the Italian tech scene prepares to face the second decade of the 2000s.

Broadband
And if this figure can be seen as positive, the same cannot be said for the type of connection. The issue of broadband in Italy remains a hard nut to crack, and no quick solutions are foreseen for the widespread adoption of “high-speed” connections. In Europe, the average broadband penetration rate is 61%, while the Italian average is approximately 12 percentage points lower. The picture becomes even more disconcerting when looking at our country’s position in Europe in the “special ranking” of broadband diffusion. Italy is placed just twenty-second, despite broadband adoption having accelerated in the last two years.

Social Networks
Nearly one in two Internet users (45%) use social networks (Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, etc.), and one in three users (36.7%) participate in website life through comments, chats, blogs, etc.

Internet Services
The travel sector is a driving force on the Internet. A significant 45.1% of users utilize the Internet to plan or research trips. News websites, primarily newspapers, are followed by 44% of Italian Internet users. One in three users (30%) consult and use banking services, and TV and radio services (31.3%).
