Skype has been down since yesterday, Wednesday, December 22, 2010: a gradual outage that progressively affected more and more users. Suddenly, the VoIP service stopped functioning correctly, with users being continuously disconnected and then reconnected. Online presence lasts only a few seconds before another disconnection occurs.
What is happening to Skype? This is the recurring question that has been bouncing around social networks since yesterday, leading to an official statement from the company itself: the system used by Skype to interconnect (via peer-to-peer) has struggled.
This was due to numerous supernodes (to draw a simple comparison, we could define them as “highway interchanges” of the network) going offline because of a problem present in some versions of the program, “breaking” many communications and interconnections between computers and phones. This triggered a domino effect, involving thousands of users and ongoing communications.
Skype should be back up and running in the coming hours, according to statements from the staff who assure the diligent work of engineers, engaged in creating new supernodes.
The priority is obviously to restore normal conversations as soon as possible, while group video calls will likely take a bit longer.
