Sony today announced two new additions to its ever-growing range of full-frame E-Mount lenses.
The new models include the FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM wide-angle zoom lens (SEL1635GM) and the FE 12-24mm F4 G ultra-wide-angle lens (SEL1224G). The SEL1635GM brings the extraordinary resolution and beautiful bokeh of Sony’s top-of-the-line G Master series to the 16-35mm focal length, for capturing landscapes, cityscapes, portraits, and more; the SEL1224G, Sony’s widest full-frame E-mount lens ever, offers a new perspective for all of Sony’s E-mount cameras. With these new additions, the range of full-frame E-mount lenses now covers focal lengths from ultra-wide 12mm to super-telephoto 800mm (via doubler).
New FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM wide-angle lens
The new FE 16-35mm F2.8 GM wide-angle lens joins the acclaimed FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM and FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS models and completes Sony’s lineup of F2.8 wide-aperture zoom lenses. Equipped with Sony’s most advanced optical technologies, it is the first wide-angle G Master lens and is suitable for a wide range of shooting situations, including landscapes, architecture, close-up portraits, sports, action, and more. Additionally, it has an extraordinarily light and compact body, making it practical and versatile to carry.
The new lens boasts surprising sharpness across the entire image, with a design that includes five aspherical elements, including two exclusive Sony XA (Extreme Aspherical) elements, which reduce aberration to ensure maximum resolution across the entire zoom range and at every aperture.
The front XA element of the SEL1635GM is the largest ever made and ensures premium quality. Additionally, there are two ED (Extra low-Dispersion) glass elements that reduce chromatic aberrations, improving resolution, while Sony’s exclusive Nano AR anti-reflective coating eliminates internal reflections, ensuring perfect image contrast and sharpness.
The lens features a nearly circular aperture at every setting, and the combination of the XA element with the 11-blade aperture design allows for images with perfectly focused subjects and beautifully blurred backgrounds or “bokeh”. The model is also equipped with DDSSM (Direct Drive Super Sonic Wave Motor) which integrates into a floating focus structure, ensuring fast and quiet autofocus, perfect for both video and photos.
Furthermore, the SEL1635GM is dust and moisture resistant[i] and features a fluorine coating on the front lens, which helps prevent dust spots or impurities and remove them if they become a problem. It is also equipped with a focus hold button and a hood lock button.
New FE 12-24mm F4 G ultra-wide-angle lens
A unique ultra-wide-angle lens, the new FE 12-24mm F4 G packs extraordinary image quality into a compact and lightweight design, weighing just 566g. Sony’s widest full-frame E-mount lens, it offers a perfect perspective for capturing landscapes, architectural subjects, and interiors in photos and videos.
It has an innovative design consisting of four aspherical elements, ensuring excellent resolution and sharpness from corner to corner of the frame. Additionally, it features three ED glass elements and one Super ED glass element, which reduce chromatic aberrations across the entire image, and incorporates Sony’s exclusive Nano AR anti-reflective coating.
The new SEL1224G lens also includes a DDSSM (Direct Drive Super Sonic Wave Motor) system for fast and precise autofocus performance, a customizable focus hold button, and a focus mode selector. Finally, the body is dust and moisture resistant.
