Many have been waiting for the feature for video calls on iPhone via Skype, and so, at the end of 2010, this functionality arrives. Skype has indeed released a new version of the very popular program that allows free calls between Skype users, enabling iPhone owners to video call. The new Skype for iPhone App allows iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch users for the first time to make and receive free Skype video calls. Specifically, compatibility of the new application is ensured on iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and fourth-generation iPod touch with iOS 4.0 or higher. A data connection to 3G networks or connection to WiFi networks is required to activate video calls.
Receiving video calls is possible on third-generation iPod touch and iPad. Calls can be made between devices equipped with the new Skype for iPhone application and desktops equipped with Skype for Windows 4.2 and above, Skype for Mac 2.8 and above, Skype for Linux, and ASUS Videophone.
Video calls on iPhone arrive at a crucial time for this type of communication, as highlighted by Neil Stevens, General Manager of Consumer Business at Skype: “Video calls accounted for approximately 40% of all Skype-to-Skype minutes in the first six months of 2010, indicating that our users are eager to communicate this way from their mobile phones.” The trend, therefore, shows a decided “+” and the release of this application will provide further impetus to the habits of this user segment that already uses Skype.
The Skype for iPhone application is free and can already be downloaded via the App Store or through skype.com/go/iphone.
