Riccardo Luna leaves Wired and Antonelli arrives

Riccardo Luna announces his resignation from Wired. The news is official, announced by Luna himself via Facebook. The name of the probable successor is already known: Carlo Antonelli.

Riccardo Luna greets the readers of Wired, announcing his resignation. The news is official and was released a few hours ago, quickly spreading across the web.
Something was brewing: just last night Luna gave his Facebook contacts an appointment for this morning at 10 a.m. There was an announcement at stake, but Luna’s “tone” certainly did not hint that it was about his resignation. Rather, thoughts quickly turned to a likely new technology-based initiative: Luna is known for proposing the candidacy of the Internet for the Nobel Peace Prize. A media campaign that has gained many followers and highlights the size of Luna’s audience among Wired readers and beyond.
On time, here is Riccardo Luna’s status update from this morning, shortly after 10 a.m.: “On June 15 I leave Wired. I will miss it, I will miss you. So much“. That’s all: not a single line of more detailed explanations but many, many comments from readers who follow him not only in print but also on social networks.
The name of the successor seems to be already known: although the official announcement has not (yet?) arrived, it would be Carlo Antonelli, currently director of Rolling Stone Italy.
And so Luna leaves the helm of Wired, after launching the magazine in February 2009, but does not leave Condè Nast, the publisher with whom he will probably continue to collaborate, although it is not yet known how and in what capacity.
As for the reasons that led to the resignation decision, not much is known: rumors suggest Luna’s increasing commitments as one of the reasons.
It is also rumored that the publisher was already considering a change for Wired to make it even more popular, meaning more understandable to a reader base familiar with technologies but not strongly expert.
Probably more will be known in the next few days.
