iPhone Tracking Stopped with iOS 4.3.3 Update

Apple remedies iPhone tracking by releasing the Apple iOS 4.3.3 update. No new features regarding operating system characteristics; it is therefore a very targeted update.

A couple of weeks ago, Apple was harshly criticized: it was discovered that the iPhone allowed tracking via geolocation. In practice, a file was found in the device’s memory that could reveal the iPhone‘s location, tracking all movements recorded through cellular networks and Wi-Fi hotspots connected to the iPhone. Although Apple has repeatedly explained that the tracking does not infringe on the privacy of the iPhone user, as the data is not transferred but simply remains on the device (in the file consolidated.db), the Cupertino company has nevertheless decided to release the iOS 4.3.3 update to put an end to this practice, which was not appreciated by users. Three key points are being modified: first, the cache will be automatically cleared as soon as iPhone geolocation is disabled. Secondly, the same cache will no longer leave a trace on iTunes, as it will no longer be saved. Finally, a further change concerns the memory capacity reserved for the cache: the iOS 4.3.3 update reduces the available amount, thereby limiting the iPhone history upstream, particularly the coordinates on the cellular and WiFi network. The iOS 4.3.3 update is already available for download – to be performed as always via iTunes – and is valid for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad, iPad 2, and iPod Touch (third generation).
