PlayStation Network Reopens: Compensation and Gifts for Hacked Users

PlayStation Network, closed due to a hacker attack, is resuming activities with the gradual reopening of the community. In doing so, refunds and compensation have been announced for users affected by the hacker attack. It’s perceived as insufficient: a class action lawsuit against Sony has been announced.

Sony, following the closure of PlayStation Network due to a hacker attack that compromised its security, has called a press conference to explain what happened to users. The gravity of the situation became apparent in recent days when unmistakable announcements began appearing on websites frequented mostly by hackers: stolen data from PlayStation Network users were being offered for sale, with an estimated 2 million accounts breached.
Sony, after an initial period of silence and the portal’s closure, decided to communicate directly with its users, apologizing for the incident and assuring that significant efforts are being made to restore the system’s security. In addition to commissioning an IT company to investigate the network breach, an automated surveillance software has been implemented, allowing for the partial reopening of PlayStation Network. The system will be fully operational again during May, following a multi-step restoration process.

Sony has also decided to compensate hacked users: President Kax Hirai announced that free games and multimedia content will be provided for a specific period.

This solution seems insufficient to appease users who are currently organizing a class action lawsuit against Sony, believing the company is responsible not only for failing to secure accounts but also for delaying public acknowledgment of the problem.
While users are very angry and concerned about their credit card information, investors appear to have reacted favorably to the announcement of PlayStation Network’s reopening: Sony‘s stock price has indeed risen on the stock market after last week’s crash.
