The new report released recently by Verizon highlights how the Internet of Things (IoT) increasingly fosters the connection of citizens to their communities, particularly by bringing patients closer to healthcare services and connecting businesses to consumers.
Among the facts, figures, and insights gathered from real-world IoT implementations and Verizon experts’ experience, the most interesting examples are highlighted below:
- Oyster Farming: Ward Aquafarms, an oyster farm spanning over 4 hectares with 1,000 cages in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, aims to offer the freshest oysters possible. Verizon, in collaboration with system manufacturer Mobotix AG, has enhanced Ward’s ability to monitor the oyster farming process security – from cultivation to delivery – and predict its growth. By choosing ThingSpace, Ward was able to get active on the platform in less than an hour, download satellite images, along with other complex data such as environmental and underwater temperature and chlorophyll values, to analyze and contextualize them through Verizon Pro Services, gaining valuable insights for the company’s operations.
- More and more connected cars: Verizon Telematics is about to launch an LTE solution as a standard feature for the OEM automotive market (Original Equipment Manufacturer). The solution is designed to simplify the global expansion of car manufacturers looking to compete in new markets. Security continues to be paramount in terms of general awareness and the value that connected cars can offer to both consumers and car manufacturers. In addition to creating a privileged path to enable reliable features for security, the increased bandwidth and low latency of Verizon’s 4G/LTE solutions will enable further features such as audio and video streaming, as well as over-the-air vehicle updates – all for an enhanced driving experience.
- 3. Helping Patients Wherever They Are: Verizon is working with AMC Health, which provides digital patient monitoring solutions via smartphones and tablets. This allows customers to continue using services from home or wherever the Verizon network is available. For example, using AMC Health’s patient monitoring solution, a pregnant woman who needs to track her blood sugar levels can use a mobile phone to communicate her glucometer results whenever she wants and wherever she is, and the information is securely stored in the cloud. Her healthcare provider has 24/7 access to the information and can instantly determine if she, the baby, or both are at any risk. Thanks to this procedure, healthcare providers can offer timely and appropriate support to the mother and baby.
4. Building More Efficient Homes: BuildingLink.com, a connectivity solution for residential properties, has used ThingSpace to create a sensor network capable of connecting the gym and the laundry room in a luxury apartment building in Manhattan, allowing residents to check the availability of sports equipment and washing machines in real-time on the ThingSpace dashboard accessible via the app from their smartphone. The app also offers historical and usage data for each machine, so the manager can potentially remove underutilized machines or add others more requested by the residents.
