Optimize your Website 3/3

In this section, you will find some tricks, tips, and advice to get the best out of a website and give it a more professional look.

Links: within the text or not?

Jakob Nielsen argues that the hyperlink should be part of the text. For example, instead of writing: “Do you want to visit our virtual store? Click here” (where the word “here” contains the link), you should write “visit our store” with the link on the word “store.” Not all usability experts agree on this point. Pearrow, in fact, says that the number of users who click when they see the expression “Click here” is so high that it makes the system proposed by Jakob Nielsen less effective. In our humble opinion, it’s good to test this aspect with your users. You can even create a sort of “hidden test” by inserting both systems in strategic places and then checking the results.

Visible contacts

Sometimes you enter some sites within the vast sea of the Web and cannot find the contact area. It is a frustrating situation for the user, who may decide to abandon browsing the site due to this absence, which appears deliberate. Instead, try to include a reference to contacts on all web pages. The user will feel more cared for.

Marking the position within the site

It is important that users always know where they are on the site. Especially on sites with many pages and resources, it is essential that the user does not get lost within the pages of your site. Therefore, include a reference to the user’s position within the site on all pages, preferably at the top of the page or in the footer (as it is called in jargon). You can write the page path page by page (if the site does not have many pages) trying to make all links active (except, if desired, the last one referring to the current page) or use free scripts in various languages (ASP, PHP, JavaScript, etc.) to simplify the work (useful if you use includes for the header and footer).

A search engine is always useful

Especially if your site contains numerous resources and a large number of pages, a search engine within your site becomes indispensable. If you have a dynamic site, you can use various free resources in technologies such as ASP, PHP. For ASP, we recommend connecting to the ASPItalia site (www.aspitalia.com), while for PHP, we suggest ZioBudda.net (www.ziobudda.net).
