Mozilla announces a very ambitious open-source project: Mozilla Web Apps, a web application platform whose main feature is universality.
Mozilla, despite being in difficulty regarding the release of Firefox 4, which is taking longer than expected, is thinking big and announcing the opening of a new business branch. Mozilla Web Apps is launching, a laboratory-platform from which to access smartphone applications, PCs, and tablets.
Nothing to do with the Apple Store or the Android Market: on the Mozilla app store, applications will be universal and open, valid for any device, for any browser, for any operating system.
An ambitious, forward-looking, and undoubtedly challenging project that aims for the return of the evolved user on the web, as the applications made available on Mozilla Web Applications will indeed function in the browser, with the option to later synchronize them with personal mobile devices. Above all, this project aims to make the store useful to everyone, regardless of the device used.
Obviously, there are minimum requirements to keep in mind: the browser must support HTML5, CSS, and Javascript. As for interested developers, they can already view the API set made available, as well as all documentation and utilities, directly on the official website of Mozilla Web Apps.
A new era in the very young life of the concept of Apps is about to open: if Mozilla Web Apps takes off, both Apple and Google would have a formidable competitor at their heels, armed with the strength of universality and open source, unlike what currently happens on the application stores of the two giants.
Here is a video of the official presentation of Mozilla Web Apps.
