Motorola Sold to Lenovo by Google, It’s Official

Unexpected but official news: Motorola has been sold by Google, it is now in the hands of Lenovo.

During the past few hours, bombshell news has spread through the media and the internet in the blink of an eye: Google has sold Motorola.
The new buyer has been officially confirmed, and it is Lenovo that will now take control of the phone manufacturer, which has been in the hands of the Mountain View giant only since 2011.
Google’s staff officially announced the news, stating that Lenovo will acquire the assets related to the Motorola Mobility division, specifically referring to smartphones and tablets.
The deal was concluded at a price just under 3 billion dollars – $2.91 billion to be precise – and therefore, a launch phase of new mobility products is expected to emerge from this new financial operation, still counting on Google’s Android development support.
It should be noted that despite the initial market and observer skepticism, concerning the fact that Motorola seems to have been “sold off” by Google compared to the previous purchase price in 2011 (the amount involved was $12.5 billion), the situation needs to be re-evaluated based on a significant factor: Google has decided not to cede the Motorola patents it had acquired, at least not the most relevant ones; the secondary ones are included in the terms of the agreement.

The spoils of the previous acquisition – the reason why Motorola was targeted by Mountain View – will therefore remain firmly in Google’s hands, it seems.
There’s no doubt: curiosity is now high about Lenovo’s moves in the telephony market in the coming months.
