Motorola Project Ara, a modular and customizable smartphone

News emerges about the development of Motorola Project Ara, a research project for the creation of a customizable smartphone that is modular.

Much like with desktop PCs, smartphone users might soon have the ability to assemble their own devices.
In essence, this should be the outcome of the ambitious “Motorola Project Ara” project, initiated about a year ago and well into its development, according to reports from the official Motorola blog.
In the future, users will be able to swap out the hardware components of their Motorola smartphone, thus obtaining not only a device that is absolutely unique and tailored to their needs but also ensuring that by modifying various parts, they will always have an up-to-date terminal.
The project is undoubtedly very ambitious, especially because – despite being branded Motorola – it would fully embrace the open-source philosophy: the various usable components could indeed be from different manufacturers, not necessarily only from Motorola.

Purchasing individual modules will allow users to enhance their smartphone with the details of greatest interest. Thus, a photography enthusiast might want a more powerful camera, while a gaming aficionado could opt for a different, higher-performing graphics card.
Therefore, Motorola’s future seems to be heading towards offering customization.
It is too early to determine if such a project will gain significant traction in the broader market. It will likely be interesting for those niches more accustomed to open source, for whom this concept will acquire a different, much broader meaning.
