Shots by Claudio Piccoli with Nikon Z 7II
Leep: Nikon Z 7II + Nikkor Z 70-200 VR S f/2.8 ISO2000 1/320s 2.8
Claudio Piccoli: in this shot, I managed to capture the beautiful border collie “Leep” thanks to the help of the exceptional autofocus of my Nikon Z 7II which, in “eye detection” mode with continuous focus, allowed me to lock onto and automatically focus on the animal’s eye with impressive speed and accuracy, leaving me space for creativity and framing in a moment when the dog was never still but kept moving from one tree to another in the woods. The use of the rear display rear to frame and focus also allowed me to move agilely, following the dog without having to look through the viewfinder to take the shot. Moreover, the exceptional ergonomics of these Nikon Z mirrorless cameras are the best I have ever used.

Arancha: Nikon Z 7II + Nikkor Z 70-200 VR S f/2.8 ISO3200 1/500s 2.8
Claudio Piccoli: in this shot I managed to capture the gaze of a greyhound towards me as it bent its neck, thanks to my Nikon Z 7II. The advanced autofocus functions with continuous eye tracking of the dog allowed me to perfect the composition during the shot, even though I was dealing with a very difficult subject. The fantastic thing is that with these Z mirrorless cameras, I can dedicate myself to dog photography using just the rear screen of the camera if I want. This way, I can observe what’s happening around the scene and anticipate what’s about to happen. I think this new type of autofocus is very fast and effective allowing me to have fun even before I think I’m working, making everything much easier and more natural, even when the subject is an animal that doesn’t stay still and certainly doesn’t respond to any posing requests. The responsiveness, the precision and the speed of a camera in dog photography is a fundamental aspect, and the Nikon Z 7II responds perfectly to these aspects.

Leep: Nikon Z 6II + Nikkor 300mm f/2,8G ED VRII AF-S ISO2500 1/1000s 2,8
Claudio Piccoli: in this shot is the result of a foggy winter morning with a magical atmosphere, using a Nikon Z 6II which, thanks to its lightning-fast continuous autofocus and the precision of tracking allowed it to keep the dog’s eyes in focus throughout the run. I am very happy with how everything is made easier and more fun despite the difficulties offered by the type of shot with such a shallow depth of field thanks to the fully open aperture of a lens like the 300mm. Only in this way can I create these types of painterly bokeh in the background of the photo already during the shooting. I was also very satisfied with the Nikon Z 6II’s ability to perform at such high ISOs with so little light while maintaining its performance inautofocus precision, shooting speed, and final quality in colors, grain, and dynamic range!

Tris: Nikon Z 6II + Nikkor 300mm f/2.8G ED VRII AF-S ISO160 1/1000s2.8
Claudio Piccoli: in this photo, I managed to capture this border collie (Tris) early in the morning in complete backlight thanks to my Nikon Z 6II. Its advanced and very responsive focusing functions with an impressive shooting speed allowed me to capture the dog at its peak athletic expression during a run in the woods. Despite being in complete backlight, the Nikon Z 6II continuously kept the dog’s eyes in focus whether I used the viewfinder or the “live view” mode shooting with the rear screen of the camera, something I had never managed to do before the arrival of these Nikon Z mirrorless cameras.
