Microsoft is reportedly designing a smartwatch, a digital watch with mobile functionalities.
For some time now, the mobile technology market has been buzzing about smartwatches, next-generation digital watches equipped with an operating system and connectivity modules.
Although there aren’t many such models on the market yet (however, we recall the Sony Smartwatch that was discussed some time ago on FullPress), rumors about projects in the pipeline by various companies are increasingly frequent: while the development of smartwatches by Apple is considered a certainty, recently there have been talks of research in the same direction by Samsung and Google.
The news, launched by the Wall Street Journal, that Microsoft is also reportedly working on creating a smartwatch, has emerged today.
Specifically, the newspaper reports that anonymous sources have indicated that the design process has begun, so much so that Microsoft has already requested availability and quotes for the construction of some necessary components.
Going into more detail, Microsoft has reportedly requested a 1.5-inch touchscreen display.
This detail strongly suggests a screen suitable for the design of a new concept watch, according to leaks from sources working within Asian companies supplying this type of component.
However, the Wall Street Journal also points out that the same sources have reported that it is not yet certain that Microsoft will actually proceed with production and, therefore, the release of a smartwatch.
However, interest in these devices seems strong: launching multimedia and interconnected products that can be worn, thus being small in size but with useful functionalities, is a trend that could be very popular.
Gartner even estimates that by 2016, the market for these objects could generate a total of around 10 billion dollars, making it reasonable to assume that many companies will compete to offer increasingly practical accessories to make them an integral part of daily life.
