iPad 2 is the new object of desire for American geeks: in the first weekend after the release of the new iPad, it is said that one million units will be sold. However, there is a shadow over iPad 2 and it seems to be linked to poor screen backlighting.
If on one hand we trace the first estimates on the iPad 2 sales – and these are very flattering figures – on the other hand, the first iPad 2 reviews pointing out the defective screen have started to circulate.
Let’s start with sales: according to the first statistics which – it should be specified – do not come from Apple but from commercial operators and survey companies, as many as one million units landed in the hands of buyers in the first weekend of the tablet’s release alone.
An even greater success compared to the sale of the first version of the iPad.
If we were to draw a “profile” of the iPad 2 buyer, at the moment it seems mostly to be loyal users of Apple-branded products, some of whom come from experience with the first version of the iPad. However, there is even more uncertainty about these data than about the sales results. This uncertainty will likely soon be dispelled by official communications from Apple.
The iPad 2 accessories also sold out quickly in most stores.
However, amid great results and satisfaction for the launch of the revamped tablet, some shadow seems to be appearing on the horizon: the first iPad 2 reviews are starting to point fingers at the screens, considered defective. The problem would lie in the backlighting, as initially noted by the site Engadget. However, many other voices have since risen in this regard, confirming a less-than-stellar performance of the iPad 2 screen.
In practice, these defects would translate into “light spots” near the bezel edge. This is very noticeable when viewing images or videos with dark tones, as can be seen in the video at the end of this article. This is just one of the many videos on iPad 2, so the defect seems to be very widespread indeed.
Perhaps the solution (absolutely palliative) could be adjusting the screen brightness to levels that can mitigate the defect which, obviously, would still remain.
Apple has not yet officially commented on this, so statements are awaited to understand what to do and to know if the release date of iPad 2 in Italy – set for March 25 – will be met or postponed to try to address the screen issue.
