The first important step to create an online presence for a business, company, or professional firm is certainly the (careful) choice of the **domain name**. Let’s see what to do.
The choice of the website’s domain name must be made carefully. Why? The reason is very simple. The domain name represents the first step of the online presence that constitutes the website.
Everything starts with a domain
The first step to take before creating a website is choosing the domain. The domain names we normally know are second or third level.
- Example: www.fullpress.it (it is a second-level domain name)
- Example: booking.fulltravel.it (it is a third-level domain name)
The third level is given by the name (“booking“, in the example) that precedes the second level (“fulltravel“, in the example). A third-level domain implies that a second-level domain already exists.
All second-level domains have an extension. On GoDaddy you can choose a domain in a few steps and its extension. But what is meant by extension?
Domain extensions
An extension is everything that comes after the chosen name. In the case of this site, the extension chosen after “fullpress” is “.it” which indicates an Italian site. However, there are many domain extensions, some new generation and others more traditional like the “.com“, often used to indicate an international site. Other more or less common extensions are:
- .info: information sites
- .net: technical sites, electronic infrastructures
- .org: non-commercial and non-profit organizations
- .biz: business or commercial uses, such as e-commerce sites
- .me: blogs, diaries, or personal pages
Tips for choosing a domain name
First of all, it should be said that the domain name must be simple and easily memorable. If it is a foreign name, remember to choose a name that is written as it is read (if possible) or at least a name that is not complicated. Avoid, where possible, using domain names with a hyphen “-” or, worse, an underscore “_”. It is advisable to use a “keyword” that well represents the site and the activity, even though domain names are easily purchasable and many are already taken. Do not choose long words; the shorter the domain, the more it is remembered and typed.
The last step, not to be overlooked, is choosing the right extension. Personally, I choose .it if it’s available and, above all, if the activity is aimed at a domestic audience. However, the advice is to also secure other extensions (“.com e .net
above all) in order to protect the business and the brand.
