Google Shuts Down Ten Services: Spring Cleaning Begins

Google opens a phase of “spring cleaning”: several minor services are shut down in favor of greater focus on more valuable and impactful projects.

Google officially announces the closure of a handful of services: in difficult times when reducing waste is paramount, even a giant like Google decides to optimize resources by phasing out non-critical projects.
Under the axe of Google, engaged in what has already been dubbed “spring cleaning – albeit decidedly out of season – are therefore:
– Aardvark,
– Google Pack,
– Google Desktop,
– Subscribed Links,
– Google Web Security,
– Image Labeler,
– Notebook,
– Sidewiki,
– Fast Flip,
– Google Maps API for Flash.
Ten services eliminated in favor of an ever-increasing focus on the company’s much more profitable projects: it’s impossible not to notice how much the Mountain View giant is doing to strengthen the social network sector with Google +, the browser side with Chrome, and the sector dedicated to mobile and operating systems, with Android.
These, in fact, are the new challenges for Google, which, having established itself as the number one company in the “search engine” sector – with virtually no rivals – cannot ignore the strong impact that the advent of Facebook has had on user browsing habits.
This is likely the crucial point of Google‘s growth, combined with the development of solutions for mobile devices, which have now become accessible to everyone and are therefore widespread.
The work teams engaged in the projects slated for closure will be redeployed to key sectors: this is what Google has communicated, adding that, for users, the services will be phased out gradually to allow users to save any data and settings of interest.
