Google has become an MVNO, a virtual mobile operator: the novelty currently comes from the United States.
Google’s field of action and business seems destined to expand further.
This time, the direction taken is that of telecommunications, understood not as the marketing of new phones, but as a true mobile operator.
The news was released in recent hours by Bloomberg Businessweek, following further initial reports leaked by several American media outlets in recent days.
It is therefore learned that Google has successfully concluded a negotiation phase to reach an agreement with the operator Sprint. This means that Google is about to become a virtual mobile operator – also known as an MVNO – capable of offering deals and tariff plans.
In this way, the Mountain View giant would begin to make its way without immediately investing in the construction and implementation of its own (expensive) network, opting instead to utilize existing networks.
Similar services in Italy are provided, for example, by Poste Italiane and were – until not long ago – also by Bip Mobile, which later failed.
Another Italian example, which is however about to close in the coming days, is Nòverca, which is transferring its customers to TIM.
It is not possible to guess if and when Google will also enter the Italian mobile phone market, considering that its introduction as an MVNO will initially only and exclusively take place in the United States.
Moreover, the ultimate purpose of this ambitious step is also unknown: will Google eventually become a full-fledged operator? Or will it rather use its MVNO status to bundle special tariff plans with its own smartphones and tablets?
One thing is certain: this initiative is very interesting, and therefore we will continue to follow its launch and, above all, its future developments.
