A new development in the world of SERPs: Google has recently introduced Google Knowledge Graph Carousel.
This is a new way of displaying search results, specifically when indicating geographically local businesses.
Google Knowledge Graph Carousel appears when searching for hotels, restaurants, nightclubs, bars, and commercial activities, essentially when performing a very specific search within a given area.
The user will see a carousel of images, a photo gallery on a black background, appearing at the top of the regular “text-based” search results.
Clicking on an image of interest will allow you to view the location and a series of other information, such as customer reviews.
Where do the photos of hotels or venues come from?
Google states that images are extracted from active Google Places profiles, so the most plausible hypothesis is that in the coming weeks we will see an increasing number of registrations in this regard, precisely to gain greater visibility through Google Knowledge Graph Carousel.
This is a matter to study and is not insignificant, as users’ attention is certainly attracted by photos.
Immediately after the Carousel, it should also be noted that paid ads are placed, and further down – on the side – the map that geolocates the search results.

Therefore, the links for organic “natural” results, meaning the unpaid ones, are definitely placed lower, in a secondary position.
Specifically concerning hotels, there’s another element that “shortens” the chances of gaining natural traffic to your site: below the sponsored ads, Google also places the Hotel Finder box.
It therefore becomes even more important to invest in communication plans for tourist facilities and the promotion of various commercial activities, to be more visible online.
The new feature – announced on Google+ – is currently active only for English-language results and in beta, but Google Knowledge Graph Carousel will soon be extended to all countries.
