The hopes of European “Google-fans” eagerly awaiting the chance to try out the expensive but interactive Google Glass seem to have all but faded. It appears that commercialization on the continent will not happen anytime soon; in fact, it could take years rather than just months. During a Google event held in Brussels for invited European journalists, Google Glass were demonstrated to attendees. However, during the meeting, Google staff reportedly highlighted the main issue concerning the hypothetical widespread adoption of Google Glass in Europe. The interactive glasses are reportedly not compliant with the strict privacy regulations in force in most European countries. Specifically, the facial recognition system for passersby could easily come under fire, infringing on others’ right to privacy. This issue isn’t unique to Europe, but for the continent, it appears to be more pressing, rigid, and stringent.
There’s also a second aspect that might hinder the proper functioning of Google Glass in Europe: while perfect for recognizing American-accented phrases, they might not be as efficient in understanding European languages and expressions. Therefore, the voice system needs to be refined, but this seems to be the minor, more easily solvable problem. Everything, in reality, seems to hinge on the privacy aspect, and it’s impossible to ignore: just consider the numerous problems encountered in this area with Google Maps alone in various countries. Imagine the impact of a device that intuitively and automatically associates a face with a name through instant social network connections, just to mention one possible application of Google Glass. The timeline is thus extended: Europe will not see these futuristic glasses on the market anytime soon.
