Today Google announced a series of revolutionary innovations: the new Gmail usage system called Gmail Motion; a new social network called GoogleFriendship; a preference for the “helvetia” font. Too many novelties for just one day, especially if they are announced on April 1st: Google’s 2011 April Fools’ joke!
Three new innovations from Google arrive today: Gmail Motion, GoogleFriendship, and Helvetia.
The first is a feature for Gmail, the second relates to a social network, and the third is the Helvetia font. Is that all? Actually, today is April Fools’ Day, and Google never misses an opportunity for pranks.
This morning, Gmail Motion was announced as a new Gmail feature: a presentation video – which we’ll show at the end of this article – explains how to control your Gmail inbox using your body, thus saying goodbye to the mouse.
Simply connect a webcam to your PC and make specific hand and arm movements to open, delete, or reply to emails. The poor guinea pig flailing in front of the monitor might look like a very serious employee, but in reality, they are an integral part of Google’s first April Fools’ Day prank of 2011.
And what about GoogleFriendship? On the Google activity sidebar, an unprecedented space has suddenly appeared, reserved for a new social network: how strange, just yesterday we were talking about Google +1, and today, without warning, the new Google social network is launched? In this case too, it’s clearly an April Fools’ joke.
Finally, try typing “helvetia” or “comic sans” on Google: the font of the search results returned will perfectly reflect the request you just made.
