Google AdSense: Publisher Revenue Shifts from 51% for Search to 68% for Content

This time no hypotheses or calculations are needed. The percentages of publishers’ earnings on AdSense ads are revealed by none other than Google itself, and it does so using a fully web 2.0 style tool: the official AdSense blog.

No press releases, no proclamations. On the Adsense blog (in its various language versions), Google, with complete transparency (we hope they continue this path from now on), reveals the program’s revenue figures, stating: “publishers who use AdSense for content, which is the majority of AdSense publishers, earn, worldwide, 68% of revenue.” Therefore, AdSense for content leaves Google with 32%. The situation is different for publishers using AdSense for search, which is much more performant from a Click-through Rate (CTR) perspective, translating into more attractive ads for clicks but less interesting for publisher revenue at 51%. Remember that we are talking about revenue and not earnings because the income is subject to tax withholdings.

The transparency operation by Google AdSense doesn’t end here. As read on the same blog, Google announces that in the coming months, the percentage of revenue reserved for publishers on AdSense ads will be visible directly from the program’s graphical interface.

In light of this revelation, we note that overall, Google has shown consideration for publishers by reserving a 68% share, which the vast majority of online advertising networks have never allocated to publishers. The hope is that these public percentages from Google AdSense will become guidelines for online advertising.
