Firefox Overtakes Internet Explorer: StatCounter Data

Firefox overtakes Internet Explorer, albeit slightly: here are the numbers and data concerning browser usage in Europe compiled by StatCounter.

Firefox has done it: it has overtaken, albeit slightly, Internet Explorer. The StatCounter ranking on browser adoption in Europe shows this new development, which, upon closer inspection, is not simply a head-to-head race between Firefox and Explorer.
Rather than growth for the Mozilla creation, it seems there has been a decline in Internet Explorer’s usage, but the real deciding factor is Chrome: Firefox has remained virtually stable in its numbers, while Chrome appears to be growing. This lends credence to the hypothesis that Google’s browser, rather than Firefox alone, is responsible for IE’s loss of ground.
The StatCounter ranking was compiled based on usage statistics for the 5 major browsers in Europe, considering a period from December 2009 to December 2010.
Specifically, Firefox stood at 38.11%, while Internet Explorer was at 37.52%: as stated earlier, this is not a huge difference, yet the figure is significant.
Regarding Chrome, the percentage is very interesting, showing a clear step forward in user preference for Google’s browser: from 5.06% in December 2009, a year later it reached 14.08%. This clearly explains the new situation regarding browser usage in Europe.
If in the Old Continent it’s an “open war,” partly due to the more evident choice offered to users following an Antitrust decision, the scenario in the United States is no less vibrant.
It’s competition, it’s the market, it’s the natural possibility of choice.
