Great excitement at Mozilla: everything is ready for the download of Firefox 6 beta for Android. One after another, new releases are characterizing these weeks in the “fox’s den”.
Mozilla seems serious about catching up on the delays accumulated for the release of the definitive version of Firefox 4, and so, after launching Firefox 5, it is already ready to offer the download of Firefox 6 beta for Android.
In fact, for a few hours now, the possibility has appeared on Android Market, with all the innovations of release number 6.
First of all, a reduced memory usage is noted and, at the same time and in inverse proportion, a faster startup time.
The watchword seems to be “saving” even when focusing on the graphical interface: with Firefox 6, fewer pixels are used even for high-quality images, not surprisingly this version seems to be quite optimized for tablets with large screens.
Zoom is now easier to use: much “smoother”, it scrolls fluidly without penalizing images anymore and without causing “jitters” during the operation.
Of lesser impact on general performance but still very useful is an innovation concerning texts: the possibility of automatic hyphenation has been introduced.
All the detailed features, as officially announced by Mozilla, are available on the page (in English) dedicated to the changelog.
Perhaps it is still too early to draw firm conclusions, but it is already possible to say that what was the biggest flaw lamented by users of previous versions (i.e., excessive memory usage) has been resolved or at least significantly reduced.
