Facebook: facial recognition active in Italy

On Facebook, facial recognition has also arrived in Italy, after being tested in the United States: the system suggests the names of recognized faces. Since it is an automatically enabled option, here is how to disable it and block facial recognition on Facebook.

Also in Italy Facebook has introduced facial recognition, a new feature through which the system is able to recognize faces in uploaded photos, even going so far as to suggest the name, so as to easily tag that person.
The facial recognition arrived somewhat unexpectedly and quietly, without major announcements from Facebook (in fact, without any announcements at all) and this is already angering numerous users who would prefer to be informed about such possibilities.
Not everyone, in fact, likes being associated with others’ photos, especially if this operation becomes fully automatic. Imagine ending up by pure chance in a photo taken, for example, at a monument by someone we don’t even know: with facial recognition, that person – and their network of friends, at the very least – would know our name.
The system to avoid facial recognition on Facebook does exist: you need to go to privacy settings, click on “Customize” and check the “No” box under the “Suggest photos of me to friends” option.
There remains, of course, the possibility to personally remove a tag but this operation, besides sometimes being a hassle, cannot always be done promptly, leaving our name – and our face – exposed to those viewing the photo.
As usual, it is up to the user to take action, trying to disable options found by default on their profile; the reason is clear: Facebook is always hunting for personal information linked to profiles, as this is the gold mine on which the social network business rests.
It is therefore not the “voyeuristic” or jovial aspect that Facebook aims to emphasize: otherwise appropriate communication would have been given to users or perhaps they would have been allowed to decide whether to activate this feature, instead of imposing it.
It is, with more cynical realism, the amount of new information that attracts the social network giant.
