eBay: Tax Assessments Underway in Italy

According to an investigation conducted by journalists from “L’Espresso,” the e-commerce giant eBay has reportedly received a notice initiating a tax assessment from the Italian Revenue Agency in Italy.

In recent months, there has been significant discussion surrounding the revenues of major web giants, specifically concerning whether and to what extent companies like Amazon, Google, Facebook, and similar entities should pay taxes in the countries where they operate. Italian authorities are actively investigating this matter.

It has just come to light that a new investigation published in “L’Espresso” magazine reveals an indiscretion suggesting that eBay has received a tax assessment notice from Italy.

The Italian Revenue Agency (Agenzia delle Entrate) is reportedly working to collect a sum exceeding 70 million euros.

The accusation leveled against eBay‘s leadership is that the company has not paid any taxes despite conducting business in Italy (as well as in numerous other countries worldwide). Consequently, Italian authorities have calculated the unpaid taxes at 21.2 million euros, with an additional 55.6 million euros in interest and penalties applicable to the aforementioned sum.

In total, therefore, Italy – through the Revenue Agency – is reportedly seeking 76.8 million euros from eBay.

According to information obtained from “L’Espresso,” the US e-commerce giant has already filed an appeal with the Milan tax commission.

The full investigation can be read in the current issue of “L’Espresso” available on newsstands. We will continue to monitor the developments of this situation in the coming months.
