Although it cannot be formally done, for a few hours it has been possible to download songs from Spotify with a Chrome extension called Downloadify.
Trouble looms for the music streaming service Spotify: a Google Chrome browser extension has appeared that allows users to download songs from Spotify.
It’s called “Downloadify” and was created by a developer who then made it available on Chrome via the Web Store.
By installing this particular feature, users gained access to Spotify’s entire catalog, enabling them to download songs, moreover, without DRM.
This was also possible due to a flaw in Spotify’s security system which, as discovered yesterday specifically because of Downloadify’s spread, is evidently not encrypted in a way that prevents downloads.
A disclaimer is necessary: downloading songs on Spotify is absolutely not within the service’s terms of use, therefore the operation – if performed by users – must be considered completely illegal, it is important to specify this.
So much so that, once the trend that emerged precisely yesterday was identified, the Spotify staff intervened to remedy the issue and put a stop to this flaw in the software architecture which – it was later discovered – operated by exploiting the Web player.
At the moment, therefore, the Downloadify extension is no longer able to function and has also been removed from the Web Store.
Definitely a significant problem for Spotify, which for about 24 hours was used like a file download system for music.
