Don’t lose your bearings when teaching the web to kids

Don’t lose your way is the educational project designed to help young people aged 13 to 18 use the web carefully and safely.

Personal data, videos with inappropriate content, careless acts spread online that can undermine privacy: the web in the hands of a youngster can be dangerous if not properly managed. “Don’t lose your way” is the new initiative aimed at middle and high school students, a project of web education promoted by the Ministry of Youth, Google/YouTube and the Postal and Communications Police.
All schools can request to join the project by writing an email to polizia.comunicazioni@interno.it, so that they can host lessons and workshops held by appointed officers.
In particular, the training workshops will focus on privacy protection online, on netiquette and consequently on the rules of online communities, on sharing user-generated content (for example, videos uploaded on YouTube or photos posted on Facebook), on methods of reporting inappropriate content and on copyright protection. Particular attention will also be given to episodes of cyberbullying, a widespread phenomenon not to be underestimated.
Courses like this have already been successfully launched during the past school year, but this year there is a new addition: the opportunity also offered to parents and educators to attend these workshops.
Scott Rubin from Google talks about this specific option: “Google does not want to shy away from the responsibility that an important digital player has in terms of education about internet use, especially regarding new generations. I say this as a parent as well as a Googler. For this reason, Don’t Lose Your Way is only one of Google’s projects in this area, but an important project as it sees us closely collaborating with institutions and civil society and therefore has great concreteness. It allows us to engage with users and their needs. And it is precisely based on this experience that we decided to expand the project to parents, educators, and associations offering support to people with disabilities.”
Don’t Lose Your Way is therefore the institutional answer to the uncertainties of parents awkward with their kids’ new social 2.0 environment and the educational path chosen to teach how to use the web, without falling into dangers or at least recognizing them in order to avoid them.
