New wireless contraceptive method with chip coming soon

In the near future, contraception could change its face and become increasingly technological: it is learned that a new contraceptive method functioning via a microchip is under study.
The company MicroCHIPS, located in Massachusetts, has indeed developed a controlled hormone-release device, implantable under the skin with a chip capable of “dialoguing” with reference tools: from PCs to remote controls, via smartphones and tablets.
In this way, it could be decided to activate and deactivate it without a new outpatient procedure by medical personnel. At the same time, it would be a useful long-term device, intended to be used for many years.
The idea stems from a request by Bill Gates – among the project’s funders through his “Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation” – to Robert Langer of MIT: would it be possible to have a female contraception tool that is easy to use, controllable, and manageable independently?
The answer was affirmative and came from the past, as Langer in 1990, together with Giovanni Santini and Michael Cima, had already developed an implantable chip equipped with a module for a controlled-release device.
This equipment, licensed to Microchips, is therefore the answer: next year the process for the experimentation required by US regulations will begin, with the goal of a sale that could happen in the course of 2018.
Not only would the chip be activatable and deactivatable whenever the user wishes, but it could interact wirelessly with a PC or smartphone, so that referring doctors can always have precise data on the functioning of the contraceptive device.

Such a novelty would undoubtedly be interesting in the field of contraception, although Gates’ and fellow philanthropists’ request was born not so much thinking about the general habits and customs of the population, as reflecting on what tools to provide in poor countries for birth control. Furthermore, the device’s lifespan itself – estimated at 16 years of operation – could be a breakthrough in the medical field in general.
Beyond the necessary medical authorizations that will have to be obtained, it is legitimate to wonder how much the user’s privacy can be guaranteed.
Can patients be assured that the data coming from the device cannot be accessed or tampered with?
Similarly, how can malfunctions of the remote control system for hormone release be avoided?
Legitimate questions but difficult to answer, at least at the current stage.
