Augmented Reality on Smartphones to Promote the Province of Ferrara

The innovation of Augmented Reality on smartphones proves to be a valuable tool in supporting the promotion of the Province of Ferrara, which has utilized precisely these innovations within the “Provincia di Ferrara – Emozioni Tipiche Garantite” advertising campaign.

The new application used for the launch of Emozioni Tipiche Garantite (Guaranteed Typical Emotions) is based on augmented reality, which is the complex of innovations that make it possible to overlay multimedia elements, virtual content, geolocation, and processing of other data. By using a mobile phone to frame, for example, a monument of interest, users can retrieve all useful information, having an interactive guide at their fingertips that “communicates” in real-time.
This new application was presented during the Festival di Internazionale and consists of the interaction between the free browser for viewing information in augmented mode, LAYAR, and one’s smartphone, whether it’s Android or iPhone. In this phase, simply going to Ferrara will show points of interest (in this case, some businesses participating in the Emozioni Tipiche Garantite project) with relevant information, directions to the destination, contact details, and location on Google Maps.
This is the first phase of launching augmented reality applications in Ferrara and its province, as work is already underway on new levels useful for tourists.
