Aruba wins .cloud extension and beats the giants

Aruba won the auction to secure the “.cloud” domain extensions. Registrations will open first for trademark holders, then for everyone.

The Italian company Aruba has achieved a major victory in the internet sector: it has won the ‘.cloud’ extension.
This is not a trivial matter considering that the other bidders were all major players of a certain caliber: Amazon, Google, and Symantec, to name just three of the undisputed protagonists of this story and this sector.
Therefore, the domains with the ‘.cloud’ extension will be branded ‘Aruba’, all thanks to the company’s decision to participate in the auction organized for this public domain.
The financial details of the operation have not been officially disclosed, but various sources that followed the entire operation speak of figures around 10 million dollars. Certainly, considering the general interest from competitors as well, these are large sums of money.
Great satisfaction was expressed by the CEO of Aruba S.p.A., Stefano Cecconi, who stated: “We are proud to have won this globally important domain. We have been leaders in the Italian market for over 20 years and have been investing in cloud development for several years now. With a European network of data centers and offices in England, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Hungary, our Aruba Cloud offering is increasingly focused on global expansion: at Aruba, we see the cloud less and less as a product and more and more as a long-term vision”.

It was then explained that the procedures for requesting registrations of possible new domains in .cloud, concerning registered trademarks, have been officially opened.
There is time for the next two months to take action in this regard, by contacting Aruba directly.
Subsequently – once this first phase is completed – the staff at work will begin to assign domains to anyone who wishes to request them.
As for the prices, the plan is to charge a few hundred euros for registered trademarks, while everyone else will pay significantly less later on: likely around 10 euros.
