Smartphones without SIM cards and freed from operators: this is what Apple and Samsung are trying to achieve.
Major smartphone and tablet manufacturers are finalizing new models that, in the future, will be able to do without housing SIM cards.
Apple and Samsung, in fact, want to propose an alternative to the prevailing model, promoting the possibility of using virtual SIMs.
The negotiation table with the major global mobile operators has reportedly already been opened. Besides Samsung and Apple, top executives from the global association of mobile operators are said to have participated in the discussions.
This is reported by the Financial Times in its columns, explaining that work is underway to create a “universal” SIM, not necessarily tied to a single mobile carrier.
This way, users could virtually switch instantly from one operator to another, depending on the most convenient offer for one or more services.
By doing so, the SIM card would remain unique and always inside the device, while still having multiple choices in terms of rates, plans, and temporary offers.
The scenario appears quite plausible and convincing, at least when thinking about Apple products: the existence of the so-called “Apple SIM” is certainly not science fiction, a tool we recently discussed right here on the pages of FullPress.info, regarding the fact that the innovation is about to arrive soon in Italy as well.
According to reports from the Financial Times, major global operators – including Orange, Vodafone, AT&T, and T-Mobile – have expressed fairly positive opinions on such a possibility, or at least do not seem averse to the hypothesis of abandoning SIM cards as they are currently understood and used.
The scenario is therefore still entirely to be drawn, but the projects have already begun.
