Concrete danger for those using Android or Blackberry smartphones: some viruses are spreading using the Zitmo program.
Given the ever-increasing spread of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets, an intensification of attacks by viruses and malware was to be expected.
This trend is absolutely confirmed: even in these hours, there is a new danger that is undermining the security, in particular, of Android and Blackberry smartphones: a series of new malware has indeed been discovered.
The common denominator appears to be the propagation method: according to initial findings by Kaspersky Labs laboratories, the malware activates through the Zitmo program, an “old acquaintance” for those involved in security.
It is the “junior version” of Zeus for PCs, whose operation on smartphones is recognizable: once installed in the form of an app, Zitmo automatically sends all SMS messages in memory to a Dutch mobile number.
At this point, the data is sifted, searching for useful information such as emails, other phone numbers, credit card details, etc….
Zitmo is certainly not a brand-new program as it has been circulating for at least a couple of years, but Kaspersky Labs laboratories report that what is causing alarm is that a version with a rather recent creation date, about a month ago, is circulating: a sign that the program has been enhanced and is being refined for smartphones in particular.
There are two paths for prevention, in order to avoid being attacked by one of the versions of this malware, found in at least five different forms.
The first tip is not to download applications of dubious origin; the second useful consideration is to keep the smartphone’s antivirus constantly updated.
