The moderators of a virtual community are the so-called “peacemakers,” meaning those who are responsible for preventing some members from letting the “discussions” degenerate within the community. They are very important within forums dealing with important topics and within relevant newsgroups. Moderators can be distinct figures from the staff and leaders. They are highly valuable in newsgroups as they filter out spam and inappropriate messages.
