Chat Abbreviations

ACK

Acknowledgement. Indicates that an email has been received.

ALIAS

Means pseudonym or assigned second name.

AT

Indicates the pronunciation of the @ symbol, commonly called “chiocciola” in Italian.

ANTINUKE

This is a program used to combat nukes.

ANTITROJAN

This is a program designed to combat Trojans.

BANNARE

To kick a user out of a channel without them being able to return. A user is banned if they behave unworthily within a channel.

BOT

It is a program that performs certain functions automatically on IRC, even if they are not legitimate. It is short for robot.

BUZZ

Refers to the Channel in chats.

CLONE

A user who uses two different names for connection.

EMOTICONS

Facial expressions made with certain letters or symbols like parentheses, colons, etc. They describe a person’s mood in a few characters. They are usually read by tilting your head (90 degrees) and are very common among chat users, as well as those who use email or send SMS messages to mobile phones.

FIREWALL

These are programs that prevent unauthorized people from accessing your PC. Usually, with these programs, you can identify all open ports to better protect them from external intrusions of any kind.

FLOOD

To disrupt a channel by bombarding it with repeated phrases or pings. This action is unwelcome by channel users who often take action against this behavior.

HANDLE

Has the same meaning as nickname or pseudonym.

IRC

Internet Relay Chat.

KICK

Another way to kick a user out of a channel who is causing disruption within it. It precedes banning.

LAG

A unit of measurement that indicates the time elapsed between sending and receiving a message in chat.

LAMER

Inexperienced users, unlike hackers, who try to send anything (nukes to Trojans). You should stay far away from this type of user.

LOG

These are archive files where online conversations are stored.

MODERATORE

It is the user who sets and enforces rules.

NETIQUETTE

The rules of conduct on the Internet to better regulate online life. It derives from the merger of the words Net and Etiquette.

NICKNAME

Pseudonym used by users in chat to hide their identity.

NUKE

It is a program that tries to exploit the poor security measures adopted by an IRC user. Usually, someone who nukes causes the connection of the nuked user to drop by sending a series of data that makes the connection unmanageable.

OFF TOPIC

A topic that is not in line with the themes discussed in the channel.

ON TOPIC

A topic that is in line with the themes discussed in the channel.

OWNER

Moderator.

PING

Command used to check the time elapsed from sending a message to its response.

SERVER IRC

The server used to connect to IRC or mIRC. There are several in Italy. The most common and well-known are: IRCnet, irc.tin.it, irc.flashnet.it, irc.sienanet.it, irc.unipi.it, and irc.stealth.net.

SPLIT

When two connected servers have problems due to a network failure, it is referred to as a Split. It can happen, therefore, that during a chat some users suddenly disappear.

 

TAKEOVER

It is the action of taking possession of a channel. A sort of chat “coup” where the one who takes power expels all other operators. Often, this channel becomes invite-only, precluding access to other users.

TOPIC

The title of a discussion topic within a channel.

TROJAN

It is a program that conceals another program within it, which clandestinely enters the PC. Hence the name Trojan horse.

WISPER

The whispered message between two users in a private discussion in a chat.
