What does the Italian online payments market look like and what are the prospects?Paypal has been present in the Italian market for just over a year and has already reached over one million active accounts in our country, with a growth rate of one new PayPal account every 29 seconds; this data shows us a growing and lively interest. Although Italy is known as a country where distance commerce has never flourished greatly, we must consider that there are now more than 3 million registered users on eBay.it, and that the development of e-commerce is continuously growing; also a recent research conducted by Research International shows that over 600,000 Italians will buy their Christmas gifts online. This indicates how e-commerce is increasingly becoming an Italian reality, and having secure and reliable payment methods like PayPal only benefits it.What is the relationship of Italian businesses with these systems? PayPal is accepted as a payment method by an ever-increasing number of professional sellers; not only on eBay but also outside the platform. This is due to its easy access to the service, the speed of real-time transactions, and the security it guarantees; PayPal is the most secure method of online payment and maintains the lowest level of losses due to fraud in e-commerce – 0.35% compared to the average level of about 1.10% among the top 150 online shopping sites. What is the relationship of Italian end consumers with these systems? Italians have developed an excellent relationship with PayPal: one year after its arrival in Italy, active accounts had already reached one million; an Ipsos survey presented this year shows that beyond the security it guarantees, PayPal is chosen as an online payment method because it is the fastest (72%), inspires the most confidence in online shopping transactions (67%), and is the easiest to use (64%). Moreover, the same survey highlights that 94% of PayPal users declare themselves extremely satisfied. What is PayPal’s vision? The goal is to spread and establish itself as the preferred and favored online payment method among Italian users; to this end, we are continually improving and confirming the features that distinguish PayPal and make it preferable to other payment methods.Who is your typical customer? Actually, there is no profile for the PayPal customer; accounts are opened by professional sellers attentive to payment security and interested in PayPal’s speed and simplicity, by online buyers who do not want to share their credit card data but want to shop freely and safely, and by private individuals who need to send or receive payments.Who are your competitors? Systems that offer online payments, and traditional payment systems also used for paying e-commerce transactions. We are satisfied with PayPal’s 123 million active accounts worldwide and with the fact that, in the United States, one in three buyers uses PayPal as a payment method. Furthermore, we consider that PayPal.it, in only 18 months from its arrival in Italy, has moved from 18th to 6th place in Nielsen Net Ratings’ Finance/insurance/investment ranking, and Netcomm has recently stated that PayPal now represents 10% of online transactions made in Italy. What does PayPal offer over competitors in Italy, why choose you? PayPal’s strengths are ease, speed, and security. Those who already have a PayPal account can pay for their purchases without sharing their financial data with the e-commerce site where they shop, simply by entering their PayPal email address and password, or if they do not have a PayPal account, by entering their credit card data securely on PayPal, both on Italian and international sites. How did the last year go and what are your future goals? 2005 was a very important year for PayPal: the total payment volume, corresponding to the overall value of transactions, exceeded $27.5 billion, with a 45% year-over-year increase. PayPal is now present in 103 countries and accepts payments in seventeen currencies, tangible proof of continuous and constant development and improvement. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
