Nokia presents Nokia HERE, new maps that could also be useful on Android, iOS, Windows Phone and even Firefox OS devices.
It seems that the Google Maps map system is about to have more and more competitors: after the arrival of new Apple maps, also Nokia enters the field in this regard and presents Nokia HERE.
It is a new mapping system that allows navigation and geolocation, not only on Nokia devices but also on other devices.
Nokia HERE was indeed designed to run on iOS, Android, and Firefox OS, as well as naturally on Windows Phone.
However, it should be specified that the application suitable for Firefox is not yet completely ready, so we will have to wait a few more months to see its full potential.
Nokia HERE is born from the combination of Nokia’s already appreciated maps, combined with the new augmented reality system LiveSight.
Everything is synchronized, including routes, maps, and searches, in the cloud, so as to always allow easy retrieval of one’s information, wherever one may be.
The Nokia HERE project seems to be only in its initial phase: it is already clear that Nokia aims for its very decisive growth, for a clear differentiation compared to the products offered by other parties.
A clear sign of this is the announcement of the acquisition of Earthmine, a company that deals with 3D maps.
If already in the current state Nokia HERE makes use of augmented reality provided by LiveSight, the addition of technical devices for the creation of a three-dimensional environment as well will bring a significant further characterization to the ambitious project signed by Nokia.
What is certain is that already today Nokia HERE stands out for allowing great customization of requested maps, with the continuous updating of locations and points of interest which – being automatically signaled in the cloud – allow the maps to be enriched daily, thanks to geolocation for example.
So Nokia HERE can benefit from approximately 2.7 million updates per day, to the great advantage of users.
A large and important project that will surely allow Nokia to compete head-to-head with other players in the sector.
