Gmail: Google+ in the mail service, what it is and how to disable it

Gmail users concerned about privacy: Google allows anyone to send direct emails to your Google+. What is this new feature? How to disable it? Here are the details.

Google continues its attempts to make users of its services digest Google+ more and more.
In fact, for several months now, there has been an effort to encourage the use of the social platform, but users do not seem to appreciate the latest moves: those that have been considered intrusions into their privacy.
Google has indeed announced an increasingly strong integration of Google + into Gmail.
A new mechanism has been automatically activated that allows you to send emails to strangers, as long as they are registered on Google +.
In this way, Google aims to foster interactions between users, even if they are people who do not know each other and whose email address is not precisely known.
However, the subscribers to the email service and the social network have strongly and clearly raised their shields, not appreciating the integration: many do not appreciate what has been considered a privacy violation, to the point of finding their inbox full of emails from complete strangers and potential spammers.
The Google+ staff – and Google more generally – defends itself, letting it be known that the email address will not be visible to anyone in the sending phase of a message: it would become clear in case of a response from us to the stranger who sent the first contact.

To find out if the automatic feature has already been activated on your account, simply look in your inbox: those who have received the Google email discussing the update will be certain that the mechanism has already been automatically activated.
How to avoid receiving unwanted emails via Google +, by disabling the feature?
You will need to browse through the Gmail settings, going to the “General” screen.
Here you will need to pay attention to the item “Send email via Google+“: to the question “Who can send you emails from your Google+ profile?” you can choose four options:

  • Anyone on Google+;
  • Extended circles;
  • Circles;
  • No one.

The choice is up to the user, then.
