Advertising announcements on Facebook featuring the term “Google+” are forbidden: the effect is clear from today and involves the immediate cancellation of the ad.
A curious – and perhaps a bit exaggerated – story is coming from the world of social networks: it seems that an advertisement placed on Facebook by a programmer registered on the “blue site” was suddenly removed.
The reason? Apparently, the request for the ad itself, which read more or less like this: “Hi, I’m Michael Lee Johnson, If you’re lucky enough to have a Google account, add me on Google+.”
Johnson is a programmer who, after packaging his ad with a funny photo, decided to put it online on the paid ad platform of Facebook.
It wasn’t long before he received a message from the system notifying him of the removal of the advertisement itself, for violating the rules of Facebook.
Michael Lee Johnson immediately reacted: he let all his online friends know what had just happened, spreading the news everywhere, as indeed happened, so much so that today – a handful of days later – we are talking about it too.
Not only that, the young man subsequently decided to delete his personal profile from Facebook, as he did not like the act of censorship at all.
However, if we look at the guidelines for publishing advertisements, the hypothesis of the case in question was indeed considered! At point 6 of the contract, in fact, it clearly states that Facebook may refuse ads even in cases where “it deems that they promote products or services that compete with Facebook.”
From one perspective, therefore, Facebook’s reaction should not cause any surprise or generate clamor, considering that placing an ad implies acceptance of the rules. On the other hand, many point out that the growth of Google+ is perhaps beginning to be a potential danger to the growth of Facebook.
The social landscape is expanding: Facebook is no longer dominant, and perhaps another threatening challenger is preparing to enter the field, namely Microsoft with Tulalip.
Needless to say, Michael Lee Johnson has certainly achieved one goal: he was looking for new contacts on Google+? He had them: the news circulated in over 1500 circles and many requested his friendship.
